ESG Report of the Enea Capital Group for 2023

Innovative projects in 2023

The Group focuses on participating in activities undertaken in the development of SMR and MMR reactor concepts that potentially will help transition some assets into zero-emission sources of generation regardless of environmental factors.

Our RES investment plans account for the presence of energy storage facilities in new projects to maximise the potential of energy generation capacity and improve stability of the grid.

GOOD PRACTICES

  • In December 2023, Enea and Spain’s Cobra, a world leader in applied industrial engineering and specialised services rendered in the energy sector, signed a letter of intent to develop energy storage projects and technologies. Both parties expressed interest in working together to carry out analyses and gather experience to launch a pilot energy storage project that would be connected to a large number of renewable energy sources connected to Enea Operator’s distribution network.
  • Enea Operator finished a Horizon 2020 project: DRES2Market: Technical, business and regulatory approaches to enhance the renewable energy capabilities to take part actively in the electricity and ancillary services markets. The goal of the project was to prepare a comprehensive approach to facilitate the effective participation of renewable energy-based distributed generation in electricity markets and to enable the provision of balancing and storage services in accordance with market criteria. The focus of the project was to overcome the existing barriers (technology and regulatory framework) for developing the integration of these technologies. The effects of the project will be used when creating new EU regulations.
  • Enea Operator carried out a Horizon 2020 research and development project eNeuron (analysing the application of balancing zones to optimise the design and development of distributed networks). The main goal was to develop innovative tools for optimizing the design and operation of local energy systems integrating distributed energy resources and multiple energy carriers. The project involved installation of an energy storage facility, which is the sixth such facility to be operated by Enea Operator. The objective of the project is also to promote energy hubs as a conceptual model for monitoring and managing mobile and integrated energy systems. The effects of eNeuron are set to provide benefits to all potential entities interested in implementing such systems, specifically distribution network operators.

Enea Group’s companies are stakeholders in the following hydrogen valley projects:

  • Łaszczyński Brothers’ Central Hydrogen Valley,
  • Wielkopolska Hydrogen Valley,
  • Zachodniopomorska Hydrogen Valley.

In 2023, to develop new lines of business, we continued our analyses of the business potential of other innovations, relating to i.a.: agrophotovoltaics, hydro- and solar power plants, alternative fuels, electromobility, solid biofuels and deployment of circular economy. We assume that they will have an impact on the broadly understood energy transition in Poland. We keep looking for technologies and new business models that we intend to use at later stages, such as new RES technologies, electromobiliy, Smart Cities, Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence as well as automation of operating and production processes.

Our Group also carries out innovative photovoltaic projects. In 2023, Enea Serwis launched tests of photovoltaic systems using trackers (special devices that orient solar panels towards the sun to generate more electricity from the installed capacity). The tests are scheduled to end in 2024 and be followed by a go or no-go decision. Enea Innowacje is involved in potential cooperation in the field of high-efficiency photovoltaic cells and solutions to increase the efficiency of prosumers’ systems.

GOOD PRACTICES

  • In 2023, Enea purchased access to EV charging management software to manage and monitor charging points and enable their operation.
  • In 2023, Enea Operator increased the potential for RES development in northern Wielkopolska. The company successfully completed general refurbishment of a 110/15 kV transformer station in Wronki. With this project, the company has significantly improved the power supply to the city and municipality of Wronki and the Szamotuły County, and increased energy security in northern Wielkopolska. One of the key tasks of the new station is to help develop renewable energy in the region and connect new consumers, including institutional ones, to the grid.

We operate in eight renewable energy clusters. In 2023, we considered various forms of cooperation and participated in discussions about the local development of RES.

We take part in the work of Nadobrzański Renewable Energy Cluster which operates in five municipalities in the Lubuskie and Wielkopolskie provinces. The cluster develops projects that promote renewable energy sources and the latest technologies to protect the environment and to ensure innovative energy generation and storage. Our work in the cluster is evidence that the society is ready to carry out environmentally friendly projects and open to IT technologies that enable effective management of distributed energy sources. Local authorities brought together in the cluster, with the projects they undertake to provide local residents with energy security, play an increasingly important role in the region’s energy transition.

GOOD PRACTICE

The Nadobrzański Renewable Energy Cluster carries out a pilot implementation of Chronos System in the photovoltaic installations connected to the grid which used to have a negative impact on the connectability of new renewable capacity. The pilot project involves testing selected system functionalities, such as: real-time monitoring of PV source parameters, optimising productivity and availability of PV sources and mechanisms that prevent uncontrolled disconnecting of PV.

We are seeking to increase the number of new photovoltaic installations connected to the grid. In 2023, Enea Operator constructed ten new transformer stations (GPZ), which enhance and stabilise the operation of the grid, thus reducing the number of refusals to connect new RES to the grid.
